Piemonte’s Langhe region is famed for the great winemakers it has produced over the past century. Yet, few can rival Bruno Giacosa, not only for the stature of his work, but for the dizzying number of famous wines he made in a career that began in 1961 and ended with his death on January 21, 2018.

And while other men have made great wines in either Barolo or Barbaresco, only Giacosa, for more than a half century, produced a steady stream of heroic wines from both zones. In fact, so remarkable were his accomplishments that his legend transcends not only Piemonte, but Italy. He was, in short, one of the profoundly great winemakers of our time.

In 1995 we decided to change our lives, we left the city life to buy a small estate in the heart of the Langhe: Monforte d'Alba, a historical village characteristic for its ancient stone houses. Located among the vineyard landscapes of the Piedmont UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also one of the "100 most beautiful villages of Italy".

Today it is a family-run winery: the property is managed by us and our two daughters Francesca and Vittoria. The estate takes its name "Corsini" from the homonymous hamlet in Monforte d'Alba where it is located and "Ruggeri", from the surname of Nicola's mother, who contributed financially to the launch of our winery allowing us to give life to our dream.

Wines:

- Doro Princic, Friulano 2022

- Benanti Rosso 2023

Price: $25

Isidoro Princic, alias “Doro”, started bottling his first wines in 1952: self-educated in Pradis, in the village of Cormòns, he was among the first vine growers to believe in Collio wines. Today Sandro, his son, is proof of that belief as he continues the work of his father. Sandro is a point of reference of Collio, with his elegant and refined wines, the result of the labour in the vineyards, which amount to 12 hectares of land. His white wines are always vinified in steel, while the reds are vinified in barrels of 20 hectolitres. Since a few years Sandro’s son, Carlo, joined the company to give a hand to his grandfather with the vineyard management.

-

At Elena Walch, a combination of sustainable manual practices and precise lot selection has always been a priority - setting benchmarks for the future. For decades, Elena Walch has been regarded as the "Grande Dame" of Alto Adige and Italian winemaking, and her family estate, now managed by her daughters Julia and Karoline, counts among the elite of Italian wine production - with international success.

Born and raised in Milan, she completed architecture studies in Venice and settled in Bolzano when she married into an ancient wine family in the village of Tramin. Fascinated by the interplay between nature, people and pleasure, full of self-confidence and energy, and unbiased by preconceptions, she set about investigating avenues for improvement. She was ahead of her times. As a pioneer, Elena Walch set the course for modern wine growing in Alto Adige and positioned herself at the pinnacle of Italian wine production.

-

The Benanti name represents a profound respect for Etna’s wine vocation. In fact, the volcano and its terroir present an important heterogeneity, which makes each slope or area particularly suitable for one grape variety over another. Mount Etna stands more than 3,000 meters high. Its slopes show substantial differences for winegrowing, including variable exposures, temperature range, altitude, volcanic soil, brightness, rainfall, rate ventilation, influence of the sea, and farming systems.

Founded in 1928 by Henri Claudius Trénel, Maison Trénel is one of the most ancient and well-known houses of the Beaujolais and the Macon wine regions of France. For nearly a century, the house has had the great fortune of working with vineyards are superbly situated and judiciously farmed. These vines consistently yield very high-quality fruit. For example, some of the vines for Trénel’s Beaujolais-Villages upwards of 60 years of age.

Maison Trénel is guided by the principles of authenticity of fruit, and authenticity of terroir. The house has always strived to produce wines & fruit liqueurs that exemplify the purest expression of their origins. This sentiment is born from a love of the land, as well as a deep respect and continued practice of Burgundian traditions. It also informs the house’s work ethic, written in Latin and evidenced on Maison Trénel’s emblem: Bene Facit Id Quod Bene Amat, or “…we can only succeed at that which we know well, and love.”

In 2015 Maison Trénel was bought by M. CHAPOUTIER to renew focus on highlighting the differences between different vineyard sites and terroirs, the wines from Maison Trénel continue to reach even greater heights.

Vignerons de Buxy was founded in Cote Chalonnaise in 1931 by a community of 98 vine growers, who, in the face of the Great Depression, sought to pool resources and formed a cooperative. The grouping of the many little family plantings, all inspired by the same values of solidarity, sharing and conviviality, resulted in a brand that represents a human and social endeavor stretching back over 89 years.

Vignerons de Buxy was one of the first wineries in Burgundy to be certified sustainable by Vignerons en Developpement Durable, a laudable accomplishment given the breadth and diversity of land and growers (in total, Buxy encompasses over 2,700 acres).

Price: $21.00

Chapoutier, or Maison M. Chapoutier, is a winery and négociant business situated in Tain-l'Hermitage in the Rhône region of France. Chapoutier produces wine from appellations across the Rhône region, but it is typically their Hermitage wines, both red and white, that receive the most attention. Chapoutier's wine labels are distinctive because of their inclusion of Braille writing on all labels since 1996.

With his pioneering spirit, Michel Chapoutier set off to discover the terroirs of the oldest continent, with an idea: growing Rhone grapes in Australia. This was the beginning of a tremendous voyage of discovery, observation and eventually, affection for that land. On what he found to be very special terroir, he planted non-grafted vines from 19th century clonal selections, imported from Europe before phylloxera took its toll. The non-negligible advantage was that in Australia, the harvest coincides with the French spring: ideal timing.

If you love good food, great wine, and unparalleled views, clear your schedule and escape for a day to Tokara. Nestled on the upper slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, our vineyard and olive grove overlook two of mother nature’s most awe-inspiring sights, False Bay and Table Mountain.

Because of our unique location, the climate, geography and soils combine to produce perfect grapes. These grapes are then hand-picked and gently transported to our state-of-the-art cellar, where our exceptionally skilled winemakers transform the fruit into award-winning wines.

- Bibi Graetz 'Casamatta Bianco' Tuscany 2021

- Cantina Santadi Vermentino di Sardegna Villa Solais 2023

Price: $20.00

Tenuta Montecchiesi Terroir - The Dal Cero family bought this estate in 1980 as a passion project dedicated to Tuscan wines. It is located in Cortona (in the Arezzo province) in southeastern Tuscany. The vineyards are located about 853-1,148 feet (260-350 meters) above sea level and see primarily sandy clay soils though there is also some sandstone, marl, and schist. The family mainly concentrates on Vermentino, Chardonnay, Syrah, which is particularly suited to the area, Sangiovese and Cabernet, which all do well in the area’s climate. Hot summer days, mild winters, good day/night temperature swings and constant breezes also see mitigating effects from Lake Trasimeno and contribute to the wines’ profile.

From a medieval castle, Castello di Vincigliata, acquired by his parents over 60 years ago, winemaker Bibi Graetz crafts his wines on a hillside overlooking the great city of Florence. Beginning initially with only a small, 5-acre vineyard on this hillside in Fiesole, in little under two decades, Bibi has become one of Italy's most ingenious winemakers adding "cult winemaker" in addition to "talented abstract artist" to his dossier.

Cantina Santadi is located in the province of Sud Sardegna, in the southwestern corner of Sardinia on gently rolling hills blanketed in vineyards that tumble down to the crystalline sea. This stunning wine-growing area features fabulous sandy soils, the blistering island sun, salty sea breezes, native grapes, and old vines, many bush-trained. President Antonello Pilloni, Winemaker Riccardo Curreli, and General Manager Massimo Podda, work together to produce wines deeply rooted in the Sulcis terroir, driven by a great desire to bring Sardinian wines to the world. Founded in 1960, Cantina Santadi began as a partnership between fine local growers, making high-quality, terroir-driven wines a team effort. As a result, from day one, Cantina Santadi was able to establish a reputation for making phenomenal wines from native Sardinian varieties.

The property was bought by Johnny Garetto in 1929, and sold in 1951 to Beringer, who used it as a blending and production facility for almost 30 years. It wasn’t until Gerret and Tatiana Copeland became the sole proprietors that the winery and vineyards were completely renovated and over 100 acres of estate vineyards were added. In 1935, his dream came to life when he began revitalizing an abandoned parcel of land in the Venetian countryside. He chose the location well — this had been a region of fine vineyards since Roman times. He would bring it back to its former glory, employing new agricultural science and honoring his commitment to the needs of the locals. Such an inspirational place could only bear one name — that of his one true love, his wife Margherita. Situated in Val Trebbia, il Poggiarello stands among peaceful woods and silent vineyards. It is here that we make our wine, using certified organic grapes according to the tradition of entire generations.

There are families that are destined for meeting, joining and leaving a mark in the history of a territory. This is what happened to the Ferrari and Perini families, who met for the first time in 1882 and, from then on, they wrote together the history of wine in Piacenza and later they founded Cantine 4 Valli.

In the 80’s, with the arrival of the fourth generation in the Company, the families bought 20 hectares of land in Val Trebbia, with a high cultural and oenological value for Piacenza. It is among the sweet hills of the valley that Il Poggiarello was born: a new challenge for the Ferrari and Perinis having the ambition of becoming ambassadors for the territory through top quality winegrowing.

~

A magical combination of sheer determination and passion for winemaking, in a unique setting: this typifies Cantina Francone in Neive, a stone’s throw from Barbaresco in the rolling hills of the Langhe.

Our roots lie in a family tradition, consolidated over time, with a strong bond to the local area.

Our philosophy follows the traditional methods of the classic fine wines of the Langhe area but is coupled with a desire to continually improve our results year on year. This means that we select each grape variety individually as it is suited to each vineyard dependent on position, altitude and terrain. This produces an extensive range of quality wines produced in limited quantities.

Two principles guide us:

Respect for the vines, cultivated in an “integrated agriculture” manner Wine-making and ageing processes which respect the raw material and its natural characteristics through lengthy fermentation on the skins and sulphite content 60% below the permitted level.

Our aim is to make wines that are both elegant and drinkable and not solely full-bodied and structured. This is not a “numbers” story of hectares and bottles but of the work undertaken in the vineyards by hand, from the winter pruning to the harvest.
