Brothers Vincenzo and Gianluca Ippolito are the youngest in five generations of Ippolito grape farmers and wine growers (founded in 1845). Their roughly 100 hectares are divided between about 70 on the Mancuso hillside (Mancuso is slang for “left” because as you exit Cirò Marina, you turn left to get to the vineyard), and another vineyard very close to the sea. The clay-marl soils of the Mancuso hillside are planted to Gaglioppo, the clay quickly turns into a slippery-gooey mess when saturated by rain. Their farming does not purport to be Organic, but it is as natural and respectful of the land as possible.

La Valentina is a leading example of the modern renaissance of winemaking in Abruzzo. The region has a history as a source of inexpensive bulk wine production, but a new generation of winemakers has dedicated itself to harnessing the excellent terroir to produce high quality rather than high quantity—and La Valentina is at the forefront of this movement.

Rather than turning to international grape varieties or varieties that are more at home in other regions, the Di Properzio brothers remain true to the traditional varieties associated with Abruzzo: Montepulciano and Trebbiano Abruzzese, along with a time-honored but almost forgotten variety, Pecorino. The shift in focus is not in the grapes but in the way they are grown and vinified.

Founded in 1978 by the vision of Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Banfi represents a marriage of winemaking passion and technological innovation. Through collaboration with Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's most eminent winemakers, the land purchased in Montalcino was transformed into a crucible of quality and potential. The acquisition of the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone subsequently further enriched the portfolio, integrating Piedmont's sparkling wine tradition into the Banfi world.

Banfi Piemonte, born together with the Montalcino winery, embodies the same pioneering spirit, approaching the production of classic methods and other Piedmontese wines. By acquiring historic local wineries, Banfi combines tradition and innovation, enhancing the Piedmont terroir. Here, vineyards are cultivated with respect for the environment, producing high-quality sparkling wines, Barbera and Gavi. Each wine is a tribute to tradition and innovation, making Banfi Piemonte a laboratory of ideas and winemaking excellence.

Wines:

- Mesa Vermentino, Sardegna 2024

- Givanni Rosso, Etna Bianco, Sicily 2024

- Giovanni Rosso, Etna Rosso, Sicily 2023

Price: $25

Cantina Mesa began in 2004 as the fulfillment of the dream of its founder Gavino Sanna, the most celebrated name in Italian advertising. Sanna wanted to create something as extraordinary, unique and simple as his beloved Sardinia, on the island for the island.

Located in Sant’Anna Arresi on a hillside carved out by the winds and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Cantina Mesa rises up on high, overlooking the gently rolling hills toward the Porto Pino Valley, the low-lying farmsteads known in the local dialect as “medaus” and the coves of the Porto Pino peninsula.

The soul of the winery is revealed in its name: Mesa in Sardinian means ‘table’, nourishment, maternal love, sharing a meal with friends, simplicity and the scents of Sardinia.

The Cantina Giovanni Rosso is located in Solicchiata, Castiglione di Sicilia. The farm is situated a few kilometers before Passopisciaro down to Montedolce, a small inactive crater that gives its name to the Contrada. We are on the northeast side of the volcano, an area perfectly suited for producing red wines. The new holdings extend over fourteen hectares in one single plot, of which just over six hectares are dedicated to viticulture: 1.2 ha for the whites and 5.5 ha for the reds (Carricante and Nerello Mascalese with small percentages of other local grape varieties, as the tradition requires). The training system has been renamed as “candelabro”.

Roberto de la Mota is an icon and pillar in the Argentina wine world. Considered the proverbial Godfather of Argentine wine who led the movement of the country’s world class wine production, he has been immersed in the world of winemaking and viticulture for almost 50 years. He was named the 2024 Winemaking Legend, Medal of Excellence, by Tim Atkin.

Growing up under the stewardship of his father, Raúl de la Mota, he is considered one of the most prized winemakers in Argentine history. Legendary French enologist Émile Peynaud encouraged Roberto to go to France to study Agronomy after he received his degree in Agriculture and Winemaking in Argentina. Returning home to Mendoza from France, Roberto’s time there, as well as applied techniques with French barrels and varietals like Semillon and Petit Verdot, made him the go-to, heavily sought-after winemaker.

La Posta Fazzio:

Luis Reginato is a third generation winemaker and viticulturist who has been working with Nicolas and Laura Catena since he graduated from Agricultural Engineering school in Mendoza in 1999.

Today Luis is Vineyard Director for the Catena Zapata family vineyards and an active participant in the Catena Institute’s viticultural studies, which focus on high altitude, cool climate wine-growing.

Luis’ winemaking talents run in his blood. His grandparents came to Argentina from the Veneto and Marche regions of Italy and settled in La Consulta in the southernmost part of the Uco Valley in 1907, where they took advantage of its abundant farming opportunities.

Luis’ grandfather was a barrel maker and viticulturist, and his father Jose and brother Pepe also grew up in the wine business and today they are well known in Mendoza for the elegant sparkling wines that they produce at their family winery.

Piemonte’s Langhe region is famed for the great winemakers it has produced over the past century. Yet, few can rival Bruno Giacosa, not only for the stature of his work, but for the dizzying number of famous wines he made in a career that began in 1961 and ended with his death on January 21, 2018.

And while other men have made great wines in either Barolo or Barbaresco, only Giacosa, for more than a half century, produced a steady stream of heroic wines from both zones. In fact, so remarkable were his accomplishments that his legend transcends not only Piemonte, but Italy. He was, in short, one of the profoundly great winemakers of our time.

In 1995 we decided to change our lives, we left the city life to buy a small estate in the heart of the Langhe: Monforte d'Alba, a historical village characteristic for its ancient stone houses. Located among the vineyard landscapes of the Piedmont UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also one of the "100 most beautiful villages of Italy".

Today it is a family-run winery: the property is managed by us and our two daughters Francesca and Vittoria. The estate takes its name "Corsini" from the homonymous hamlet in Monforte d'Alba where it is located and "Ruggeri", from the surname of Nicola's mother, who contributed financially to the launch of our winery allowing us to give life to our dream.

In the home place (Sandar) and surname (Hem) of our ancestors, we find inspiration in origin stories and the confluence of people and place. Wines:

- Benanti Rosso 2023

Price: $25

Isidoro Princic, alias “Doro”, started bottling his first wines in 1952: self-educated in Pradis, in the village of Cormòns, he was among the first vine growers to believe in Collio wines. Today Sandro, his son, is proof of that belief as he continues the work of his father. Sandro is a point of reference of Collio, with his elegant and refined wines, the result of the labour in the vineyards, which amount to 12 hectares of land. His white wines are always vinified in steel, while the reds are vinified in barrels of 20 hectolitres. Since a few years Sandro’s son, Carlo, joined the company to give a hand to his grandfather with the vineyard management.

-

At Elena Walch, a combination of sustainable manual practices and precise lot selection has always been a priority - setting benchmarks for the future. For decades, Elena Walch has been regarded as the "Grande Dame" of Alto Adige and Italian winemaking, and her family estate, now managed by her daughters Julia and Karoline, counts among the elite of Italian wine production - with international success.

Born and raised in Milan, she completed architecture studies in Venice and settled in Bolzano when she married into an ancient wine family in the village of Tramin. Fascinated by the interplay between nature, people and pleasure, full of self-confidence and energy, and unbiased by preconceptions, she set about investigating avenues for improvement. She was ahead of her times. As a pioneer, Elena Walch set the course for modern wine growing in Alto Adige and positioned herself at the pinnacle of Italian wine production.

-

The Benanti name represents a profound respect for Etna’s wine vocation. In fact, the volcano and its terroir present an important heterogeneity, which makes each slope or area particularly suitable for one grape variety over another. Mount Etna stands more than 3,000 meters high. Its slopes show substantial differences for winegrowing, including variable exposures, temperature range, altitude, volcanic soil, brightness, rainfall, rate ventilation, influence of the sea, and farming systems.

Founded in 1928 by Henri Claudius Trénel, Maison Trénel is one of the most ancient and well-known houses of the Beaujolais and the Macon wine regions of France. For nearly a century, the house has had the great fortune of working with vineyards are superbly situated and judiciously farmed. These vines consistently yield very high-quality fruit. For example, some of the vines for Trénel’s Beaujolais-Villages upwards of 60 years of age.

Maison Trénel is guided by the principles of authenticity of fruit, and authenticity of terroir. The house has always strived to produce wines & fruit liqueurs that exemplify the purest expression of their origins. This sentiment is born from a love of the land, as well as a deep respect and continued practice of Burgundian traditions. It also informs the house’s work ethic, written in Latin and evidenced on Maison Trénel’s emblem: Bene Facit Id Quod Bene Amat, or “…we can only succeed at that which we know well, and love.”

In 2015 Maison Trénel was bought by M. CHAPOUTIER to renew focus on highlighting the differences between different vineyard sites and terroirs, the wines from Maison Trénel continue to reach even greater heights.

Vignerons de Buxy was founded in Cote Chalonnaise in 1931 by a community of 98 vine growers, who, in the face of the Great Depression, sought to pool resources and formed a cooperative. The grouping of the many little family plantings, all inspired by the same values of solidarity, sharing and conviviality, resulted in a brand that represents a human and social endeavor stretching back over 89 years.

Vignerons de Buxy was one of the first wineries in Burgundy to be certified sustainable by Vignerons en Developpement Durable, a laudable accomplishment given the breadth and diversity of land and growers (in total, Buxy encompasses over 2,700 acres).

Chapoutier, or Maison M. Chapoutier, is a winery and négociant business situated in Tain-l'Hermitage in the Rhône region of France. Chapoutier produces wine from appellations across the Rhône region, but it is typically their Hermitage wines, both red and white, that receive the most attention. Chapoutier's wine labels are distinctive because of their inclusion of Braille writing on all labels since 1996.

With his pioneering spirit, Michel Chapoutier set off to discover the terroirs of the oldest continent, with an idea: growing Rhone grapes in Australia. This was the beginning of a tremendous voyage of discovery, observation and eventually, affection for that land. On what he found to be very special terroir, he planted non-grafted vines from 19th century clonal selections, imported from Europe before phylloxera took its toll. The non-negligible advantage was that in Australia, the harvest coincides with the French spring: ideal timing.

If you love good food, great wine, and unparalleled views, clear your schedule and escape for a day to Tokara. Nestled on the upper slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, our vineyard and olive grove overlook two of mother nature’s most awe-inspiring sights, False Bay and Table Mountain.

Because of our unique location, the climate, geography and soils combine to produce perfect grapes. These grapes are then hand-picked and gently transported to our state-of-the-art cellar, where our exceptionally skilled winemakers transform the fruit into award-winning wines.
